From Rescue to Reunion

A Manatee County family had the opportunity to thank the emergency responders who helped save their 3-year-old daughter during an emotional reunion this week.

On May 1, 3-year-old Leila Maynard was found unresponsive in a community pool in eastern Manatee County. Her mother, Zilda Maynard, immediately pulled her from the water as every second counted.

A nearby neighbor, Courtney, quickly stepped in and began CPR, providing lifesaving care until first responders arrived. Emergency personnel—including fire rescue crews, EMS, law enforcement deputies, paramedics, an Aero Med team, and emergency communications personnel—worked together seamlessly to continue medical care and transport Leila for treatment.

The East Manatee Fire Rescue crew that responded was Lieutenant Mike Guard, Firefighter Ben Davidson, and Firefighter Adan Fregonese.

During Wednesday’s reunion, responders and the Maynard family shared hugs, smiles, and heartfelt gratitude—a powerful reminder of the impact that teamwork, training, and community members can have during a medical emergency.

This successful rescue was made possible through the combined efforts of a courageous Good Samaritan, skilled emergency communications, and the coordinated response of first responders. Their actions gave Leila a second chance, demonstrating the importance of acting quickly during water emergencies.

Near-drowning incidents can happen in moments. Constant supervision around water, knowing CPR, and calling 911 immediately can make all the difference in saving a life.

We are grateful for everyone who played a role in Leila’s rescue and are thankful to see her smiling and thriving today. Her story is a testament to the strength of our community and the dedication of those who answer the call to help others.
